Ujala- a change initiative taken to save electricity by the Government of India.
Ujala Yojana which was earlier launched in the name of – Domestic Efficient Lightning Program (DELP). The main motive behind this scheme is to switch the usage of 200 million incandescent bulbs to LED light bulbs which would save over 10.5 billion kWh of power.
This scheme is available for everyone and sells the LED bulb to the applicant at a subsidized price. If an applicant buys an LED light bulb through this scheme than he gets to pay a 40% lesser than the market price. Also, these bulbs have a warranty of 3 years.
As per National Ujala dashboard, the total number of LEDs distributed as on 7th December 2018 are 31,68,21,126. The energy saved per year is 41145 Mn kWh. The cost saving per year is INR 16,458 Crore. The carbon dioxide reduction per year is 3,33,27,133 t carbon dioxide.
The goal of this yojana was to reduce carbon intensity by 33 to 35 percent between 2005 and 2030. This small initiative of changing the lights not only reduced the carbon intensity but also helped small-scale electrical component manufacturing industry increase their turnover and employment opportunities.
