There is always a difference of one step for becoming a great leader from a good leader. Since a long time, a lot of research has gone by trying to conclude the difference between a good leader and a great leader.

Also, there are a few things great leaders do differently from good leaders which makes them a great leader. Here in this transformation Tuesday, we are going to talk about the difference between a good and a great leader. We will look at points one can adapt to become a great leader.

  1. Leading along with managing
A lot of people misunderstand that leadership and management is same. Whereas, these are two completely different disciplines. The good leaders can be great at managing teams and making sure of projects getting done on time and within budget. They get things done on time with no compromise on quality. But many a time, they lack the quality to inspire, engage and emotionally connect their teams to the organization’s mission. Good leaders set goals for their team members and help them to fulfill their vision. Whereas great leaders involve their teams to take part in the planning process of goal making and inspire them to collectively find ways to achieve the team goals.

  2. Focus on tasks along with its results
Good leaders believe that only the results matter not the tasks, neither its process and nor the efforts that are put in. This is not the right approach. A great leader should always give equal importance to the task and the process that is followed to come to the results. The great leader shows and sometimes even walks the path along with the team to achieve the goal which will inspire, engage and encourage its team.

  3. Serving from the bottom
Great leaders are genuine helpers for their people. They put the needs of the team above their own needs. Not only the “needs” that are associated with the success of the mission but also the individual needs of every team member. Their organizational chart looks like an upside-down pyramid

  4. Inspiring and allowing creativity and innovation
Once the goal has been set and agreed by the team, great leaders know how to align rituals, behaviors, and actions for achieving the results. Innovation and creativity are imperative not only for keeping the team members engaged but also for delivering the best possible results. This mechanism is the cultural foundation of the best performing teams in the business.

  5. Developing themselves along with others
Great leaders are constantly looking for self-improvement. Not just in their ability to lead their teams but also in their mental and physical wellness. They are usually enthusiastic readers and fitness devotees. Most importantly, they always look forward to transparent feedback from those around them. Good leaders are only open to feedback whereas great leaders implement those feedback and act. They know that if they cannot religiously work on self-development then how will they develop others.

  6. Transformational not just transactional
Transformational leaders go beyond managing day-to-day operations. They craft strategies for taking their companies, department or work team to the next level of performance and success. A transformational leader focuses on team building, motivation, and collaboration with employees at all levels to lead to positive change.

So try these 6 habits and become that great leader that you are meant to be!
